Do you really need golf lessons

People often hesitate to schedule a golf lesson because they don’t’ really understand what is involved in a golf lesson. In this post, I wanted to cover the benefits of having a golf lesson.

Benefits of having a golf lesson

1. Professional Instruction Helps

If you enjoy playing golf and want to improve your game, it’s always worth scheduling a lesson with a trained professional.

A professional golf coach is trained to analyze your game; review your grip, check your posture, go over your ball positions, and making sure that your alignment is correct.

We are trained to see things in your golf swing that your playing partners or practice buddies have not ever noticed before.  As a professional golf coach, it is our job to understand how you are swinging the golf club as it relates to your ball striking and consistency.

For many players, the simple concepts of the golf swing are unknown, and with some professional instruction, players can make great strides for total game improvement.

2. Scheduling a Lesson Makes You Play More

For many people, scheduling a golf lesson gives them an incentive to play more golf.

If you know you’re having a golf lesson, you will probably get out to the range and or the course before your lessons so you have things that you can discuss in your lesson with your instructor, after the lesson you will most definitely want to get out to the course and the practice range to work on what was discussed in your golf lesson.

Having golf lessons creates a great opportunity to practice and play more regularly, which leads nicely into the next benefit, seeing improvement.

3. Seeing improvement

Golf can be a frustrating game, every player will tell you that it can be very difficult, but having lessons and learning about how to play the game better can be very rewarding and fun when you see improvement.  Regular golf lessons can have a great effect on total game improvement.  Many players find that over time, with steady quality golf instruction the golf game improves as does the enjoyment of playing the game.

Thinking about scheduling a lesson? Here are some FAQs…

How often should I have a golf lesson?

For most of my students, I like to schedule a 5-week indoor lesson series.  I think that in 5 lessons many players can learn the correct concepts of the swing and the drills that can be done to improve the swing from the shorter clubs like Wedges to the longer clubs like the Driver.  I like to start my students off indoors with computer video analysis and my launch monitor to learn what they are really doing in the golf swing.  This is very beneficial for beginners and players that are really struggling with the golf swing.  After every indoor lesson, I provide a video recap of the lesson so players know what to work on in practice.

Once we have completed a 5-week lesson program I like to schedule an outside lesson at my academy which includes the driving range and playing the golf course.

How many lessons do you need to see improvement?

Although this depends on the golfer, and how much they practice, I find that committing to 5 lessons over 5 weeks is the best way to see improvement.  For many golfers, by the 4th & 5th lesson, they start to see improvement.

If you are not really sure if you want to commit to 5 lessons, you should schedule 1 lesson to see if you like the instruction and if you are willing to put in the work to get better.

How should I book a lesson?

Almost every golf course will have a professional coach and instructor so you can just call and ask to speak to a golf instructor.  You can also do a quick search on Google in your area to see who are the top instructors and to learn more about what they offer and to see some of their online reviews.  Picking the right golf instructor is critical to your golf game development, look for an instructor that has a track record for player development or a system that has worked for others, you are more likely to have long term benefits with an instructor that understands how to build a players golf game not just provide a single lesson.
