Ball Position

First of all, make sure you have the right ball position for your irons.  All irons should be played in the middle of the stance for the most part until you get to the 6,5,4 irons, the longer irons are played slightly forward of the middle towards the lead foot.  In all iron shots, you are trying to compress the golf ball down into the turf so you need to have a centered ball position.

Hit Ball First

Second, make sure that you are thinking about hitting the ball first with irons, you have to pinch the ball with the turf, which will keep the clubface square longer through impact.  If you can’t hit the ball first and create a divot after the strike you need to learn how to shift your weight from your trail foot to your lead foot before impact making sure that your hands a slightly ahead of the golf ball at impact creating what is known as “shaft lean”.

Smaller Swings Help

Third, if you are struggling with solid contact and distance control you should try to take a 3/4 swing, you have to adjust distance, so if you hit a PW 100 yards, you play it at 75 with a shorter 3/4 backswing, this adds control to your irons shots. Using a shorter backswing allows players to feel the movements of the golf swing better.  Focus on staying in balance, shifting your weight properly, and striking the ball first with your hands slightly ahead of the golf ball at impact.

Take the Flag Out of Play with Longer Clubs

Lastly, statistics show that even tour players don’t make many birdies hitting it close to the flag with 6,5,4 irons and longer, they make birdies by hitting it close to the flag with 7 irons and below, if you have a shot that is over 7 don’t try to hit at the flag, just get on the front of the green and two-putt the hole. This strategy can take a few shots off your score.
